About Me

I am a sometimes-writer, everyday mama, creative failure and experimental cook. I am interested in living a beautiful life, spending time with my family and making things that I can feel proud of. When I'm by myself I'm usually outside. Don't bother calling because chances are that I didn't bring my cell phone because I couldn't find it. If you see me walking, it's because I lost my keys and if you see me with only one child... I'm probably in big trouble.

Big Green Small World

So, I don't want to toot my own horn or anything, but my manager Larry told me that when he met me he immediately knew that he'd like me. He told the shop owner about me right away and even though there's a new batch of employees, I'm the only one who isn't there on a temporary basis. Hooray! I feel like it's sort of a match made in Heaven.

Also, it looks like I'll be staying at the South Street store, which I love. I don't like Center City. I really love South Philly though.

So anyway, my first day was great! I honestly think that I'm going to be really at home there. I felt a little bit useless because I'm not as familiar with the products as I hoped to be. By the end of the day I was completely comfortable on the register and I enjoyed getting to know my managers and co-workers. There isn't anyone who I don't like a lot. Every person was very warm and welcoming. It was difficult to resist the urge to buy stuff, but that would defeat the purpose of getting a job!

So, my prediction is that I'll work at the Big Green Earth Store for years. Once I get to know the merchandise I imagine that it will be the funnest job ever.

By the way, my manager reminds me a lot of my friend Mathew in Denver. It's probably one of the reasons that I warmed up to him so quickly.

Needless to say, I'm very happy!

  1. I am happy too! I'm so glad you were able to find something you like, instead of just some crappy job. It's really nice knowing you are doing something which you will enjoy, even if it is just for a little extra money.

  2. Hey Anna (and Jay!), I've been really busy and we adopted a dog so your prezzies are sitting quietly in a pile but they will come to you soon.

Congratulations on this job! I once took a second job at a vegan restaurant in Red Bank and even though it stretched my time to a ridiculous degree in order to keep it, the sense of community and positive energy did me wonders. I am so proud of you for finding this and I know its going to give you so much more than you even expect.

    Happy Halloween Season!

  3. Oh Emily, no worries! The school sent home a website that has books online and we've been using them. So, we're in no hurry. I really appreciate you thinking of us... but we can totally wait until we see you. That way we'll see you sooner, rather than later.

What kind of dog did you adopt?

  4. And Jay, this is so much better than getting a job at Whole Foods or something. Seriously, it's such a warm environment. You can tell that the few employees and employers really care about each other. There's just a really light, fun vibe there and it's totally the place for me.

On a similar note to our conversation yesterday morning, it really is better to have less and feel happier. I never thought that we'd make as much money as we do now... but we're more miserable than we were when we made 1/3 of the money. Some of my favorite memories are from that summer when we had no internet or tv. The more you have, the more you want... and unfortunately, it's easy to fall into that trap.

  5. Anna, I really love what you said in your comment about the more you have the more you want. While my world hasn't been rocked by the vile little bed bugs I feel like I was getting a little materialistic for awhile. Trying to drown some pain and feel a void with stuff.

At a great lecture this weekend by Douglas Brooks he said "You never need more than you have and you never have more than you need". An interesting idea and a great way to approach the need to buy and the need to purge.

  6. Hey Tali, I'm going to look up Douglas Brooks. I don't know who he is.

Jay and I have decided to stay minimal. We're not going to cave into the desire to replace all of our nice furniture. It's expensive and it's just stuff. If there's anything that I've learned from the bb's, it's that I was far more attached to material things than I thought I was. That's not really who I think I am or who I want to be.

  7. She is a little five-year-old fuzzy lady mixed with equal parts german shepherd and keeshond. She's already the perfect, melty and mellow dog and we're helping her gain some confidence around big dogs and loud noises.

We rescued her from being sent to a pound; her mom lost her house and job and was heartbroken to give her up. The dog was a companion to her autistic son and is the sweetest most loving thing evarrr.
